24th October - CITY OF LIVERPOOL & HEATHROW BATTLE FOR GOLD AT ROSE BOWL! AISLING RETURNS FROM INJURY AS LIVERPOOL WIN 3RD TITLE The City of Liverpool team performed brilliantly at the weekend in an epic battle for Gold against 20 teams from all four corners of the World at Britain’s premier Invitational Event. The Rushmoor Rose Bowl attracted teams from Bulgaria, South Africa and Bermuda as well as all of the top British Clubs including every member of the British Team except for Beth who was rested due to next week’s Glasgow World Cup. In the 24 year history of the event, only 2 teams have won the Rose Bowl 3 times, Camberley (now Rushmoor) from 1984-86 and the Berks Academy, Pennsylvania from 1988-90, with defending Champions City of Liverpool determined to add their name to the list of 3 time Champions! This year saw a record entry in front of over 750 spectators over the 2 days in a top class competition. After the second round, new comers Bury Spectrum and Colchester led the way with Bury Spectrum in particular continuing their great run of success this year. The South West took the Regional lead with Park Wrekin also in close contention. But by Round Four, the highly polished and exciting team from Notts led the contest by 126 points, with the South African Commonwealth Team, Heathrow and defending Champions City of Liverpool battling for Gold. To illustrate the extremely high standard, the Bulgarian Junior National Team were unable to break into the top five! As the competition entered the Final Round, all eyes were on a possible upset. Could Notts or Heathrow snatch the title, or would Liverpool bounce back to achieve a record third win? We did not have long to wait as Jodie Standish, Hannah Clowes and Aisling Wiliams stormed to victory in an epic contest against Heathrow winning Gold on Bars and Beam! Heathrow impressed throughout the competition to take the Silver medal in the team event, with South Africa winning bronze. In the Individual All Around, City of Liverpool hit a 1-2 as Jodie Standish who won Silver at the English Championships last weekend won the Individual All Around Title with 34.325, with team mate Hannah Clowes taking the Silver medal with 34.275. Heathrow’s Amy Nunes won bronze with only 0.125 separating the top 3 girls. Pipers Vale also won awards for the top Under 13 score and Leigh Rogers from Heathrow collected the highest individual score of the day with her excellent 9.0 on Vault. Olivia Richardson also won the Farrell Trophy for the top Rushmoor gymnast. Sunday saw yet another packed house as the top 10 gymnasts on each piece qualified for the Individual Apparatus Finals. Once more Heathrow and Liverpool were neck and neck, but it was South Africa’s Francki Van Rooyen who won Gold on Vault with her 8.8, and Heathrow’s Amy Nunes and Leigh Rogers winning Silver and Bronze. Bars saw the very welcome return of Aisling Williams in her first competition of the year after her knee injury, and she was back with a vengeance taking the Gold medal with an terrific performance and an 8.9, ahead of City of Liverpool team mate Abi Kirby winning Silver with an 8.55. Welcome back Aisling! Francki stepped up to the rostrum once more to take bronze for South Africa. On to beam and Notts gymnast Laura Jones who won Silver at the British Championships All Around Espoires earlier this year hit a great routine to take the Gold medal with an 8.325. Heathrow’s Leigh Rogers won the Silver medal with Bulgaria’s Maria Pisichali taking the bronze. The floor event provided a great finale as Park Wrekin’s Jennifer Hannah produced a beautiful routine to win the Individual Floor Title with an excellent 8.875, as Heathrow’s Amy Nunes won her 4th medal of the weekend in Silver position! Rinette Whelpton from South Africa collected bronze. Event organiser Colin Wright was delighted with the competition as he said “We’re getting the hang of things now after 24 years but it’s always pleasing when it runs so well. The quality of competition was as fantastic as always. We had every member of the GB team here representing their club or region, and a whole host of international competitors from all over the world producing some superb work. We were absolutely packed out here also with over 450 here on Saturday and 300 on Sunday, which is literally as much as we can hold.” Congratulations to City of Liverpool on a superb performance and to all of the teams and officials involved on an excellent competition. |

24 October - DOS SANTOS AND LAIS SOUZA TRIUMPH AT DTB WORLD CUP PONOR WINS BEAM BUT ROMANIAN TEAM MATES FAIL TO QUALIFY! BRONZE FOR GB’S IMOGEN CAIRNS AND 4TH ON VAULT! Brazilian fans were overjoyed the DTB World Cup Event in Stuttgart, Germany over the weekend of 21 -23 October as Daiane Dos Santos and Lais Souza claimed the Individual Apparatus Floor and Vault Titles with dynamic performances. World Champion Daiane Dos Santos had easily led the Qualifications for Floor with a 9.387 ahead of Valeria Maksyuta from the Ukraine on 8.912, and GB’s Imogen Cairns qualifying for Finals with 8.700. But Daiane improved her score again in the Floor Finals hitting superb tumbling sequences to earn an impressive 9.450 and the biggest margin of victory in the Event, with Kathleen Lindor from France winning Silver on 9.137. Great Britain’s Imogen Cairns, who had won the All Around English Title the previous weekend, continued her terrific recent form to earn bronze with a 9.062. Brazil’s Lais Souza produced terrific form on Vault to win the Individual Title with 9.237, after Olympic Vault Champion Monica Rosu from Romania had failed to make Finals after her disappointing 8.606 left her in 13th position in qualifiers. World Champion Oksana Chusovitina from UZB had led the qualifying event, but dropped to 7th place after landing to her knees with her second vault of Tsukahara straight with one and a half twists. Joanna Skowronska from Poland earning Silver, and Australia’s Monette Russo the bronze. Imogen again produced two good vaults for a 4th place for a 9.093 just 0.063 behind Russo and the bronze medal. On Beam, one of our favourite gymnasts Olympic Champion Catalina Ponor roared back to sensational form to win the Individual Title with a joint competition high of 9.650 in the Women’s Finals, just weeks after being sent home from the Romanian Training Camp. China’s Lili Wang and Marine Debauve from France joined Catalina on the Podium earning Silver and Bronze. Surprisingly Catalina was the only Romanian gymnast to make the Finals after team mates former World and Olympic Champion Marius Urzica finished 12th on pommels, and multiple world and Olympic medalist Marian Dragulescu was 11th on Floor and only 24th on vault. The uneven Bars also provided a great competition as China produced a 1-2 with newcomer Zhou Zhuoru winning the Individual Title with a fabulous 9.650, and team mate Lu Huang claiming the silver medal with her 9.562. Polina Miller from Russia who led the qualifications took the bronze scoring 9.537. Details from the Men’s Events appear below. |

The competition also produced major surprises when Romania’s former World and Olympic Champion Marius Urzica finished 12th on pommels. Urzica had previously won 7 DTB Titles and was hoping to move ahead of joint leader Alexei Nemov to set a new record in Stuttgart. Multiple World and Olympic medalist Marian Dragulescu also failed to qualify for Finals after he finished 11th on Floor and only 24th on vault. Russian Olympian Alexander Safoshkin began the Russian challenge by winning the Individual Rings Title with a great score of 9.737, with European and World Cup Champion Yuri Van Gelder in second place with 9.700. Olympic Champion Dimosthenis Tambakos from Greece was unfortunate to finish in 8th place after falling on his dismount. On Vault Anatoly Vaisliev claimed a second Russian Gold with a 9.675, as Russian Team mate and 2 time Olympic veteran Alexei Bondarenko continued his return from the back injury which he sustained in Athens finishing in 7th place. This followed vBonadaenko’s 6th place in the All Around at the Russian Championships earlier tis month. Jeffrey Wammes from the Netherlands had a mixed Final earning the lowest and the highest scores of the Final as he had to abort his first Yurchenko 2 and a half vault for a 7.800, and then responded with a terrific 9.725 for his handspring layout with double twist. Russia made it 3 out of 4 Individual Titles as double Olympian and former World Champion Nikolai Kryukov earned the Gold medal on Pommels with 9.725. China’s Zhang Hongtao won Silver with 9.700 and Spain’s Victor Cano the bronze. Ioan Sucio from Romania finished 4th. Canada’s Brandon O’Neill continued his recent success winning the Individual Floor Final with a superb routine for a well deserved 9.562. This followed his Gold medal performances on Floor at the World University Games and Pan Am Championships. On High Bars the honours were shared as Slovakia’s Aljaz Pegan and double World Champion Vlasios Maras from Greece tied for Gold on 9.750. Pegan was originally marked at 9.65 after performing his own speciality Pegan somersault with a triple somersault to end but his score was eventually increased to 9.75 to tie with Maras following loud disapproval from the crowd at the original mark. And Slovakia celebrated a second Gold Medal on P Bars when Mitja Petkovsek hit a 9.712 to finish ahead of Zhe Feng from China. Some of the gymnasts will now fly straight to Glasgow for the next World Cup event on Tuesday and Wednesday 25th & 26th October. |

SAMANTHA BAYLEY HOPES TO BE BACK IN A MONTH AFTER INJURY GB International gymnast Samantha Bayley told us today that she hopes to be able to return to training in a month after fracturing her tibia in the build up to the trials for next month’s World Championships. |
|
17 year old Sam from the Welsh Institute of Sport was at the English Championships at Wiltshire on crutches cheering on the other competitors when I caught up with her and asked how the injury occurred. “ I was doing double Arabian on Floor and landed with straight legs and fractured my tibia. I’m not feeling too bad but really miss doing gym, I’m hoping to be back in about in a month and I can’t wait ”. We’ll miss seeing Sam competing at the Glasgow World Cup and she must be so disappointed that this has happened in the build up to the World Championships, especially after her fabulous performance winning the Silver Medal in the All Around competition at the British Championships in July, and representing GB against China. On behalf of all British Gymnastics fans and her many supporters around the World, get well soon Sam, we can’t wait to see you back! |

October 14th- FAN YE WINS THE ALL AROUND TITLE AT CHINESE NATIONAL GAMES World balance beam Gold medalist Fan Ye captured the all-around title at the Chinese National Games in an absorbing contest against three other favourites for the Title, fellow Olympians Cheng Fei and Zhang Nan plus crowd favourite Zhang Yunfei. Cheng Fei led after the first round on vault where she performed superbly with a score of 9.734 against 19 year old Fan’s comparatively low score of 9.184. Athens Olympic All Around bronze medallist Zhang Nan could only manage a 9.15 from a start value of 9.4 on her weakest event, and Zhang Yufei who led after the qualifiers and team events hit a 9.384 in an event which is traditionally one of China’s weakest apparatus. But Fan Ye surged into the lead in the second round with a terrific performance on uneven bars scoring 9.700, whilst Cheng Fei had to settle for a 9.100 and Zhang Yufei moved into third position with an excellent routine. As the girls moved to beam, they received a great reception from the crowd who sensed a possible upset, but the 2003 World Champion on this piece, Fan Ye consolidated her lead with an almost perfect performance for a 9.787. The atmosphere was electric as Zhang Nan responded brilliantly with a 9.784, only three hundredths of a point behind Fan Ye. But Cheng Fei was determined to win the All Around Title, and she hit a great 9.550 to place 4th, as Zhang Yufei fell after a major wobble to earn only a 9.017. |
